It's Your Nature...
Over 350 species to discover! Check out my Bird Gallery to see some of the species you can see in Central Texas
So, you are coming to Central Texas and you want to see the remarkable birds (and other wildlife) of the region. I don't blame you! Nearly 350 species inhabit the Hill Country, the Plains east of here and the Greater Austin/Georgetown area, including specialties like Golden-cheeked Warbler and Black-capped Vireo! Here, east meets west and north meets south! Depending on the season and habitat, this can be a great place to find Wild Turkey; Upland, White-rumped, Pectoral, Baird's and other Sandpipers; Franklin's Gull; Yellow-billed Cuckoo; Inca Dove; Golden-fronted, Red-bellied, and Ladder-backed Woodpeckers; Woodhouse's Scrub-jay; a variety of wrens and warblers; Yellow-throated, Blue-headed, White-eyed and other Vireos; nearly 20 species of Sparrows; Painted Bunting; Dickcissel; Black-backed Lesser Goldfinches, and many more. Here https://ebird.org/barchart?r=US-TX-491&yr=all&m= is the eBird list for Williamson County, which is pretty accurate as far as the timing and likelihood of occurrence for each species in this and Travis Counties. I can offer customized, guided excursions for individuals or groups, which can be tailored for birders and nature enthusiasts with any level of experience, and geared to any and all comfort levels.
There is a reason why seasoned birders live in Central Texas, where East meets West and Temperate meets Tropical! Where else can you find McCown's Longspurs and Great Kiskadees, the Carolinas (Wrens + Chickadees) and black-backed Lesser Goldfinches and Roadrunners? Within striking range are Prairie Plains (with Sprague's Pipits, Dickcissels and Scissortail Flycatchers) and Hill Country Wildlands (with Golden-Cheeked Warblers, Painted Buntings and Black-capped Vireos). And literally, everything in between! Spring, Winter, and Fall are all great times to visit. Summer? For all but the hardiest birders, time to "keep it weird" exploring Austin culture.
Whether you are coming to the area specifically to bird, or want to get in some birding while visiting Austin for the food, music (Antone's, SXSW, ACL Live, etc.) Culture (Esther's Follies or Zach Theater) and Austin Weirdness --maybe even the millions of Mexican free-tailed bats—any time of year can turn up some interesting avian (and human) activity. And depending on your personal interests, I can offer you not just a great birding trip, but suggestions on ways to optimize a memorable Austin experience!
Are you interested in more than just the birds? I am. Sure we can bird, bird, bird ‘til it hurts .... but if you are interested in mammals, reptiles, butterflies, edible and often colorful native plants, or the karst geology with the caves and bats, well, I like sharing all of this too.
HOW TO BOOK YOUR BIRDING TRIP
A good bet is to give me a call at 310-487-3353 or shoot me an email at avitropic@sbcglobal.net. We can customize a plan. For a single or couple I charge $275 a day and $175 for half a day; a 3rd and fourth person in vehicle are $50 each. I provide transportation, scope, water, and for full days, some snacks. You can pack a lunch, but with so many famous barbecue and Tex-Mex restaurants, taco trucks and rural homestyle cafes around, I would be remiss in not recommending we stop for some Texas cuisine during the day. I can also recommend lodging (and to round out your visit, entertainment options!) in the Austin, Round Rock, or Georgetown areas.
